Our Lectionary readings for next Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, are Acts 2:1-21; Psalm 104:24-35; 1 Corinthians 12:3-12; John 7:37-39.
William Temple was the Archbishop of Canterbury, the leader of the Church of England, during the early and dark days of World War II. In that context, he presented a series messages from the Gospel of John reminding Christians of the task of making Christ known in a troubled world. Jesus promises in John 7:37: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink." Jesus also says (v 38), "He who believes in, as the Scripture says, 'from his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water." Temple makes the point: "He who trusts in Christ not only receives the water of life that springs up to eternal life, but becomes the [channel] of that gift to others."
We who are thirsty understand not only that Christ meets our needs, but that Christ would use us to meet the needs of others.
We will have a congregational meeting after morning worship on May 31.
Our next OT study will be after morning worship on June 7. Pack a lunch and we'll wrap up our study of the Historical Books.
